Unfortunately he'll never be Mike Morhaime. Mike was the CEO and President of Blizzard Entertainment. Brack is merely the president of Blizzard Entertainment. Currently the CEO is Bobby Kotick, this means Brack will ALWAYS have his hands tied behind his back in ways Morhaime never did. Doesn't mean he can't still do great things but there will never be the kind of decision-making freedom that existed under Mike Morhaime.
You need to educate yourself and look up the differences between a CEO and President, what powers each has, and how this affects the corporate decision making process. Money makes games, when you don't have the powers to allocate it because someone above your head is pulling the strings it vastly limits what you can do and how you have to go about doing it. When you don't have direct control over who you hire for various department heads it vastly limits your potential.Morhaime had FULL control of everything at Blizzard, there wasn't a single person on the ladder above him so he had ultimate authority to influence how the company did it's business.Brack answers to the CEO of the company as well as the board of directors.
Again, I'm sure they'll still make great games because that's what Blizzard does. However the freedom to explore (and fail) on projects like Titan will be a thing of the past. If that same project was greenlighted today it WOULD make it to the store shelves, there's absolutely no way the CEO and board would let them invest years of work into a project that gets shelved. It would release, even if it was terrible, just for the sake of recuperating the funds lost in the investment. Don't get me wrong, I've been a Brack fan for a LONG time and I think he's the best choice to run the company but things are definitely working differently at Blizzard Entertainment now. It's an utter shame that somewhere in the legal obligations (probably from the original Activision buyout in 2008) there was language that would eventually eliminate Blizzards ability hold it's own Chief position.
"There's no real room currently for a mini-expansion concept, where a zone like Argus may not have the heft of a full-fledged expansion" thats a blatant lie. If you couldnt make an entire planet, the homebase of the Legion, into its own expansion then thats youre own failing, not the locations. Argus had tons of potential and was a MASSIVE lorecation you summerized into a handful of months.Yet despite a planet of extremely influential characters not being enough for an expansion, some backwater islands constitute a full expansion somehow.
Argus would have been a hateful nightmare of an expansion. I am so tired of fel green I could scream.Don't care about Mike. He was probably at the helm from Cata-WoD somewhere and those were the worst expansions this game has seen. Legion was changed dramatically somehow (Suramar City was built circular to be inside Teldrassil and that obviously changed, Legion had no new "city," just Dal, etc.) and for the first time had a good STORY instead of the fan-boy written crap that was Cata and WoD in particular. No, the game wouldn't continue to exist 15 years later if they hadn't changed to meet needs, and hopefully they will continue to do so (Classic is a major example).
This is tragic really. A lot of people do not seem to understand the scope at which Mike was responsible for the lifeblood of the community- and a lot of people seem to be willfully ignorant of Brack's own shortcomings.Remember how much opposition we had to get Classic?Remember "yOu thINk YOu DO buT YOu dOn'T"?
He was just pointing out that WoW has brought a lot of improvements to game play since then, and what he was referring to specifically are the "it's not a bug" list, where people are realizing Classic was buggy, hard to play, and ugly. I'm glad they did Classic just to get rid of the Classic-whiners from Live. Go play your old, broken version if you like. Sorry, the first two expansions of WoW were from Warcraft writers' story, not WoW. WoW writers got their chance to show what they were capable of with Cata ("GOELL! Let me scream and follow you around agonizing quests Goell!"), which wasn't much. If but for the new leadership, WoW would have been dead with the horrid, boring storyline of WoD. Likely someone at Activision forced Blizzard to save its own GAME.
"You think you want it (Classic WoW), But you really don't" - J Allen Brack at blizzcon speaking down to people during a Q&A followed by explaining that they made WoW great now and why we're wrong for wanting the original. Don't gloss over it and definitely do not gloss over the immortal bull!@#$. They were two major examples of blizzard employees showing zero respect to their community. Hell, we have this blizzcon where you need to install spyware to get in. Don't try defending them. Its been established multiple times the app IS spyware, and as a bonus it encourages ticket scalping! To those defending blizzards choices - good luck. BFA has the lowest sub count in the history of WoW because of the way they've operated in the last several years. They abandoned proper story telling in exchange for drama porn to draw in a younger audience, constantly cut corners and ignoring their player base. Classic does not constitute as listening, rather its more a move to correct their mistake in shutting down non profit private servers that had no effect on WoW. Unlike what blizzard was hoping for the majority of those players either did not come back or they flat out canceled their existing subs.
"BFA has the lowest sub count in the history of WoW" -- prove it or drop it. The new Arathi and Darkshore are more than I got from any previous expansion, and the story is amazing now, where it was was not so great in the past. If Mike cared that much about WoW he wouldn't have dev'd an even more toxic game and leapt over it to it. And the "decision making" under "Mike" almost killed the game. Sorry, WoD was the lowest point in this game's history in terms of users, most likely, not now. After 8.2 and the rest of BfA, where the AI gets more advanced, WoW begins to make massive benefits to the game NPC AI in general for the next expansion, and I can hardly wait to see what they do with that.
I have no particular dislike for Brack, I just don't trust him to handle the games I love. Whether it's his choice, or his hands are tied, I don't trust him to make a choice that is in the best interest of the players Vs wringing every last dollar out of us. Considering the current climate of companies and the drive for profit, maybe that's not fair, but it's how I feel.
"Should we have made Argus its own expansion?" Yes, yes you should have. But you didn't and we were denied the beauty of what that could have been. All these years knowing we would eventually end up there to stop Sargeras, only to have it served to us TV dinner style and sprinkle some "planets broken this is whats left" plot macgyvering. Really disappointing.
