Even if they only give us one new ability every expansion, it's going to get bloated and feel less special before long. We definitely need some kind of new combat ability occasionally, but cosmetics are the way to go for long-term rewards. Just use an account wide system like honor levels but with regular levels.Toys, pets, mounts, hairstyles/colors, tattoos, "green fire" type spell changes, etc. They don't require any balancing and you know that once you've got them, they're yours permanently. You don't have to worry about them getting nerfed or pruned later on.
<In some ways, we designed the Azerite armor system to respond to what we saw as a failing in Legion Artifacts in a lot of ways. Legion Artifacts had fantastic choice and customization but it was very frontloaded. It was one of those areas that players didn't complain about, but we saw a lot and perceived as designers.>~Ion Hazzikostas~I'm going to type this out nice and non raging as a casualish player that rejoined a few months after Legion kicked off. To the designers, for a change you had players not complaining. For the 1st time in what, 14 years....? edit: more edits
From a expansion I want:Fun, interesting, cool new zones.A great story.Amazing new things to mog.New races to explores and play.New classes or improvement of new classes.A reason to log in after max level without it feeling stale. What I don't want:Breaking wheels to see if triangles roll better.
I don't hate or blame Blizz for what they're doing with the game. It's an old game by everyone's standards, the devs are just experimenting with new stuff while trying to organize the old. It just so happened that the experiment with azerite kinda flopped for a lot of people.WoW will only really die when the devs stop trying to do new things... that said, I'd have been perfectly happy if we kept artifact abilities as baseline passives that started at 100 and ranked up from 100-110.
Ion needs to step down and return to encounter design, or be fired. There has never been a more incompetent, elitist, ignorant, and hostile lead dev."copy from Facebook"
If only there was some indication the Azerite system was dead on arrival, like every theorycrafter on beta asking what blizz was smoking.
I have said repeatedly that one of the problems with the beta is features which you have to be max level to test. I realize though if you let people roll a beta character at max level, getting people to test leveling is hard. I don't have a really good solution for this.
However, Ion also acknowledges that perhaps Blizzard went too far in this temporary design direction; players want "cool new things" as they level up in "new worlds," WHAT NEW WORLDS? We have been on azeroth for what 3 expansions? Outland is only the true other world we've been too, and no draenor doesnt count because its just a reskinned outland b4 gul dan went all " hand of gul'dan "Argus also doesnt count, 3 small zones is nothing.
what new ability have they given druids?
