Patch 4.2: Farewell, Keyring

World of Warcraft has evolved quite a bit since the day the Keyring bag slot was added in patch 1.11. When implemented, the Keyring provided players with a convenient way of storing dungeon, quest, and other keys automatically. Back when the largest bag was a mind bottling 18 slots -- rumored to be bottomless -- the Keyring helped save precious bag space. But as things tend to do, time went on, bags got bigger, and designs for (literally and figuratively) gating content evolved through the years. In today’s Azeroth, keys don’t really serve much of a purpose except to take up physical storage space from the game (which could be used for other awesome stuff), and visual interface space from you. Because of this, we’ve decided to get rid of the Keyring in order to free up that space for new features. This change could also potentially allow us to play around with the amount of default storage space you’re allotted down the road. So, what does this mean for you and the keys you might not have looked at in the last couple expansions or so?

We’re currently working on the implementation of a system in patch 4.2 which will handle the removal of the Keyring, while causing you as little hassle with keys as possible. Some keys which no longer serve a purpose in the game will automatically be removed from your inventory. In return, you’ll be compensated for them with their respective vendor sell prices in gold. You might also have random leftover quest keys from outdated quests, or quests which were removed in Cataclysm. Keys that fall into this category have no use and no sell price, as they are labeled as quest items, and will be automatically removed from your inventory. Any remaining keys that might still potentially serve some use in the game will be transferred into your regular inventory. If there is not enough space in your inventory to hold any leftover keys once patch 4.2 hits live realms, the keys will be placed in a backlogged storage system. Once space is made for a backlogged key, the key will take that space after you log out or switch to a new zone (i.e. changing continents, entering a dungeon or Battleground, etc.).

We are continuing to work on new ways of allowing you to better manage the storage of various items in the game, and it is our goal to make sure the removal of the Keyring causes as little inconvenience to you as possible.

We still have a number of keys that serve a purpose. Heroic BC, for example. Karazhan. We still want to be able to access that content, so will key requirements be removed from those?

So, just as a reference here are the keys we're currently seeing as ones that will not be converted to gold or removed upon release of the patch -- if you have them they'd be put back into your normal inventory. This isn't necessarily a final list, and it's possible we could cut the list down even further before 4.2 releases.

I wonder why they chose to do this, is it just to free up resources at their end? It seemed odd to me that they didn't do this...Comentado por 527820This post was from a user who has deleted their account.Comentado por 582112This post was from a user who has deleted their account.Comentado por ContayWell, testing on the PTR right now, one is still able to enter the TBC Heroic 5-mans just fine without their respective Reputation keys... but unfortunately that seems to have been the extent of Blizzard's throughness of "key necessity removal".

NOTE: Remember that there are Locksmith NPCs that are in major cities; added into the game when the keyrings were first introduced to help players reobtain keys they had to dispose of to make room in their bags ages ago. They can return keys that are earned via quests. They will not refund non-key items, non-dungeon/raid associated keys, keys that drop from mobs in dungeons/raids or keys that are readily sold by vendors.

Accessing Karazhan without the Master's Key is impossible (unless someone else opens the door for you). Locksmiths can return this key to you.

Literal physical access to the Violet Hold (in Dalaran) is impossible without its respective key, thus making it impossible to go to the dungeon above level 80. Locksmiths can return this key to you.

The Jump-a-Tron 4000 in Nagrand is unusable without its associated key (provided a 3-minute slowfall buff that helps out tremendously from surviving the jump off of the Aldor teir/easy Going Down? achievement completion). Not re-obtainable by a locksmith.

Icehammer's Harpoon Controller is still required for a quick and stylish transport off of the side of Nifflevar to Valgarde. Not re-obtainable by a locksmith.

Malygos (Eye of Eternity). Not refundable by locksmith, is returned instead by Alexstrasza in the Dragonblight

Algalon (Ulduar).

Whilst I am not a massive tabard collector I already have the best part of a dozen spaces taken up by them in my bags and bank. I'm a little more concerned about Blacksmithing and where the skeleton keys go than having access to those old instances that required keys.Comentado por dagobergI believe before cata came out I had actually reached a limit to how big the keyring could be, though I don't recall the number, instead of counting I was just a little annoyed some keys had to be placed in my inventory. The removal of the Keymaster achievement actually upset me more than it should, it could have been just converted to a feat of strength, but the entire removal seemed harsh. Now this... I get it that the world is evolving and that is a good thing, I understand, but until this is properly handled I'm still gonna be sitting with a few set of keys on my bag that will damage my already depleted spare storage space. I like collecting stuff. I collect sets in the game, off tier pieces, weapons and whatnot and we're still a bit far from the Foror's storage bag or whatever bag sizes of 36 So I'm a little concerned. Keys I did it only on my main because IRL I actually walk with a keyring with 15 keys or more to which I know exactly where they go and need on daily bases (when flying I keep them in my cargo luggage bag because I got tired of the jokes about it being a throwing weapon).

In short I'm disappointed with these changes, although their plans seem reasonable. I'm hoping they will use that extra space to increase our default bags as they implement these changes, cuz atm, as a paladin I'm forced to carry my holy and prot gear in the bags with me at all time and still have t2 and a few extra 'useless' weapons and offset gear cuz my bank is full.Comentado por xaratherusSo this means that Blacksmithing keys will have to be carried in your inventory then.

Sort of a bummer. The Obsidium keys don't require BS to use (or at least they didn't the last time I looked) - only a certain level (I think 80 or 85), so I had sent a stack over to all my high-level characters to open lockboxes.

I wish now that I'd picked up Keymaster while still available; looks like it's far too late now.

All that being said, as long as they iron out the bugs with this before it hits live, it's really not that huge a change - and as someone else said, perhaps they're changing the keyring into tabard storage instead. :)
