About the Author
This guide was written by Llarold! I’ve been tanking since Vanilla. During Mists of Pandaria, I saw an opportunity to begin writing guides, and I took it with the hopes of making myself a better tank and making the community into better tanks with me. I hope it’s working!
I am active in all of the tank class Discords but primarily contribute to theorycrafting discussions in
Peak of Serenity
and
Skyhold
(Monk and Warrior). I’m active on
Twitter
, where I mostly talk WoW (and basketball), and I’m half of the team responsible for the YouTube channel
WoW at Night
, which focuses primarily on tank guides and previews.
Monks have received 4 new Legendary powers on the Patch 9.1 PTR earlier this week:
Chamado às Armas
(Kyrian),
Preparado Abundante
(Necrolord),
Harmonia Feelina
(Night Fae), and
Ensinamentos Sinistros
(Venthyr). Up to this point in Shadowlands, Kyrian has been the de facto Covenant choice for Brewmaster Monks, due to the strength of
Armas de Ordem
and
Frasco de Serenidade
, excellent soulbinds, and a general lack of weaknesses. The greatest strength Kyrian has isn't simply that it's better than other Covenants, it's that it's much more versatile. Every other Covenant has scenarios in which it can compete with Kyrian, and many more scenarios in which it can't. Kyrian is always good. More importantly,
Último Barrilete do Malte do Trovão
is the go-to Legendary whenever you are tanking anything challenging, and
Furor Calcinante
is the Legendary of choice for maximizing raid DPS. They are both great bonuses.
Do any of the new Legendaries change anything for Brewmasters?
No. Let's break them down anyways.
Chamado às Armas
(Kyrian)
Kyrian, presumably as punishment for being the best Brewmaster Monk Covenant, has the weakest Covenant legendary, maybe of any class/spec in Shadowlands.
Chamado às Armas
is a shockingly weak bonus -- half a
Evocar Niuzao, o Boi Negro
cast whenever you use
Armas de Ordem
. We're talking DOZENS of DPS!
Evocar Niuzao, o Boi Negro
already has a reduced cooldown thanks to
Andar Com o Boi
, so this doesn't even wind up being as much of a DPS gain as the baseline skill -- a cooldown that isn't exactly putting Brewmasters anywhere close to the top of the tank damage meters. Yeah, there's really nothing positive to say about it. Both of the current go-to Brewmaster Legendaries far, far outperform it in almost every possible scenario. Even if you want to maximize your DPS over a very, very brief window just for fun,
Deleite do Invocador
is a better bonus. This one is useless.
Preparado Abundante
(Necrolord)
Preparado Abundante
, the Necrolord bonus, is probably the most interesting of the entire group. Unfortunately, interesting doesn't mean good. "Low chance" is ominous wording. At present datamining, it's listed around 1.25 procs per minute. Personal testing (an hour spent demolishing the small AoE dummies in Orgrimmar) seems to show it's under 1 ppm, which isn't great. Additionally, in the interest of determining whether procs would extend the duration of a hard-cast
Cerveja Pó de Osso
, or simply reset the debuff duration to 10 seconds, I literally could not get this bonus to proc while
Cerveja Pó de Osso
was already active. Whether it's blacklisted from being able to proc during that time, or if the proc rate is just simply that low, either way, I'm not thrilled. That's an hour of my life I will never be able to get back. Ultimately, the problems with this Legendary are the same problems that affect Necrolord as a Covenant. Even when Necrolord is at its best, it's just not as good as the standard Kyrian/
Último Barrilete do Malte do Trovão
setup. When it's at its worst, it's a lot worse.
Harmonia Feelina
(Night Fae)
Night Fae also gain an interesting bonus with
Harmonia Feelina
, and it's probably the best power of the bunch. Doubling the reset chance of
Pisão Feelino
significantly improves its reliability as an offensive and defensive skill, and that's terrific. Unfortunately, that's the end of the good news. The problem here is that the big issue with Night Fae Monk -- how badly it gets punished by movement -- does not really get fixed by this bonus. Night Fae Monk has two other, smaller issues that are similarly unaddressed. First, it's only good in AoE. This doesn't make it competitive in single target. Most of the bosses in the upcoming raid are primarily single target encounters. Not good. Also, it's a somewhat-unreliable sustained AoE DPS increase. Burst damage is generally much more important than sustained damage, and Kyrian is much, much better at adding burst damage. Ultimately, this bonus is compelling on paper, but doubling the reset chance of
Pisão Feelino
doesn't compete with
Último Barrilete do Malte do Trovão
, and 8% more damage and healing on targets as a tank just isn't very good. There's a very, very small chance this could be competitive and popular in the upcoming patch, but probably not.
Ensinamentos Sinistros
(Venthyr)
Lastly, Venthyr Monks are virtually nonexistent, and for good reason. Their Covenant ability stinks.
Ensinamentos Sinistros
adds a tiny bit more juice onto
Ordem Decaída
, but frankly, it's just not good. Even under optimal AoE conditions, this Legendary bonus only shaves away roughly 30 seconds of cooldown time. That can't compete with any of the other Brewmaster Legendary options, not even a tiny bit. Beyond that, the Venthyr Covenant ability's only remotely competitive niche is single target encounters. It's still worth than Kyrian, but it's at least slightly more competitive. This bonus really only scales well into AoE, where Venthyr is extra-bad. This bonus is just awful. It makes no sense, and there is absolutely no situation in which you should ever use it. Ever. A cynical person could argue that's intended -- why waste time designing a good Legendary for a bad Covenant?
Here's the wrapup:
The current go-to setup of Kyrian Monk running
Último Barrilete do Malte do Trovão
is a terrific tank. It's absolutely as tanky as any class in Sanctum of Domination testing thus far. None of the new Legendary powers threaten to change that -- or to be useful at all. That's fine.

So Blizzard finally dropped the new set of Covenant Legendaries for Monks. We'll look at each one today individual, then discuss at the end if these will shake up any of your current selections.
Preparado Abundante
(Necrolord)
Our Necrolord legendary will trigger a
Cerveja Pó de Osso
on the target of any of our spells or abilities. This means any healing event or damage event has the chance to trigger the
Cerveja Pó de Osso
cast. This is a full cast of
Cerveja Pó de Osso
, so it will trigger any appropriate spell or ability interactions. It has the same 8 yard radius as the cast-able ability. It will also trigger soulbind abilities such as Emini's
Liderança pelo Exemplo
. The proc rate is currently set is 1.25 PPM, and it is unaffected by Haste. With the random nature of the ability trigger, this can swing wildly in power. You could trigger it on an add or boss, with only a handful of individuals getting hit with the splash. On the other side, if it triggers in a clump of raid members, before a large amount of damage, this can be extremely powerful.
Chamado às Armas
(Kyrian)
Next up is our Kyrian covenant legendary. This will trigger a cast of our celestial (
Invocar Yu'lon, a Serpente de Jade
/
Evocar Chi-Ji, a Garça Vermelha
) for 12 seconds after every
Armas de Ordem
cast. This provides some additional healing each time we cast
Armas de Ordem
. It will always ensure we have an additional cooldown on a two-minute timer. It also means we can ensure we have
Evocar Chi-Ji, a Garça Vermelha
up for every
Armas de Ordem
cast. This also always you to move your 3 minute Celestials to a different point in the fight and cover additional healing needs of your raid. Overall, a pretty ok legendary, nothing spectacular though.
Harmonia Feelina
(Night Fae)
Now onto our Night Fae friends and their new covenant legendary. This legendary doubles the reset chance for
Pisão Feelino
and also triggers
Exposição Feéria
on any targets hit by your
Pisão Feelino
. The reset chance is interesting as you will get more chances to reset the ability while fighting in it. This does suffer a bit as the graphical animation for
Pisão Feelino
does not last very long for other players, so you may find it hard to stay within the faelines while fighting. The 8% increase in healing is a nice touch, but from a numerical perspective, this is one of the weaker legendaries available to us.
Ensinamentos Sinistros
(Venthyr)
Finally we come to our friends over in Revendreth! The Venthyr covenant in general is not played much, and this legendary will not change that. The legendary itself will trigger an additional adept from
Ordem Decaída
. It will also reduce the cooldown of
Ordem Decaída
by 3 seconds each time you crit with an ability while your adepts are active. This means that for roughly 24 seconds, you will reduce the cooldown of
Ordem Decaída
each time one of your abilities or spells critically strikes. This can trigger from damage or healing events, so there is a chance of a larger amount of cooldown reduction. Right now, under some conditions, getting 60 seconds of cooldown reduction does not seem out of the realm of possibility.
Now that we have laid all 4 of our covenant legendaries out, how good are they? Right now, when compared against our currently available, none of them will over take the likes of
Lágrima da Manhã
or
Ensinamentos Ancestrais do Monastério
. They do offer a noticeable power increase to our covenant abilities, but will not be an option with their current tuning. I could see in the future, if we are ever able to wear two legendaries,
Preparado Abundante
or
Chamado às Armas
being a worthwhile second legendary for us.

Last week, Windwalkers finally got to see what their legendaries would be for 9.1.
Chamado às Armas
(Kyrian)
How it works
Whenever you use
Armas de Ordem
, you will summon a Xuen that lasts for 12 seconds. During this time the Xuen should function the same as if you had cast
Evocar Xuen, o Tigre Branco
. Currently that is not the case as there is a bug currently in which if both Xuen's are out, they will only cast
Raio de Tigre Potencializado
as if there were one, and when one despawns, the remaining one will no longer cast
Raio de Tigre Potencializado
. We assume this is a bug that will get fixed, and if it does then this will functionally increase Xuen's strength by 50%.
How it compares
Because of the incredible strength of
Deleite do Invocador
,
Chamado às Armas
really doesn't have a chance to be considered for the top spot. There is a theoretical chance that in sustained AOE situations, with using Mikanikos,
Chamado às Armas
's value is increased enough due to more casts of
Evocar Xuen, o Tigre Branco
which means more summons of Xuen. However, even in this more extreme case, its only likely to get closer to even with
Deleite do Invocador
, not outright surpass it.
Sims:
Patchwerk
DungeonSlice
Harmonia Feelina
(Night Fae)
How it works
Currently there is a 6% chance for any ability to reset the cooldown of
Pisão Feelino
, this legendary would then increase that change to 12%. This is a pretty sizable increase. As long as you're standing inside the shape on the ground, you'll have a higher chance to get the cooldown of
Pisão Feelino
reset. In addition to the reset, any enemy target that is hit with
Pisão Feelino
will receive a debuff that increases the damage that you do to them by 8%, any ally that is hit with
Pisão Feelino
gains increased healing from you for 10 seconds.
Using
Pisão Feelino
when the target still has the debuff will just refresh it, so its unclear whether or not we'll want to just use it right away for maximum chance at resets or whether we'll look to hold onto a cast of
Pisão Feelino
in order to maximize the uptime of the debuff. The nice thing about the debuff is that its a set-and-forget debuff, so you still benefit from the damage bonus if you're unable to stand on the line for it.
How it compares
Harmonia Feelina
is incredibly strong.
Deleite do Invocador
was previously the best legendary, and didn't have very strong synergy with
Pisão Feelino
.
Harmonia Feelina
has incredibly strong synergy with
Pisão Feelino
, which makes it far and away the best legendary for Night Fae. While it does put a much larger emphasis on standing inside the line for maximum resets, if you're able to do that then you'll see a 4-7% increase in damage, especially in AOE situations where the damage that comes from
Pisão Feelino
is more impactful. All together this pushes
Harmonia Feelina
ahead of
Deleite do Invocador
for Night Fae, and into the top spot for this covenant.
Sims:
Patchwerk
DungeonSlice
Preparado Abundante
(Necrolord)
How it works
This mechanic has a 1.25 proc per minute chance to drop a
Cerveja Pó de Osso
onto your target and surrounding targets. This more than doubles the frequency with which you gain the benefit from
Cerveja Pó de Osso
. This is an entirely passive legendary, and since
Cerveja Pó de Osso
itself doesn't dramatically change how you play, you simply need to be aware of its presence, especially in AOE, and enjoy the increase in damage.
How it compares
Unfortunately even though this is very strong, based on the sims it does not currently beat out
Deleite do Invocador
for Necrolord. Although more frequent
Cerveja Pó de Osso
are good, the fact that
Deleite do Invocador
lines up with every other
Cerveja Pó de Osso
and all your other cooldowns, simply pushes that combination too far ahead for
Preparado Abundante
to compete.
Sims:
Patchwerk
DungeonSlice
Ensinamentos Sinistros
(Venthyr)
How it works
Whenever you use
Ordem Decaída
, you first summon a
Ordem Decaída
Monk that stays the entire 24 seconds. This
Ordem Decaída
Monk functions the way the rest of them do, just lasts the entire 24 seconds of the duration of the summoning portal. Once you press the button you don't need to worry about it again, it just goes about its business.
How it compares
Realistically, if you're playing Venthyr then you're not doing so because of all the DPS that you get out of it, you're doing it for the aesthetics or another reason.
Ensinamentos Sinistros
does work well with the aesthetics of the
Ordem Decaída
ability. However, because the
Ordem Decaída
Monks do scale their abilities with haste,
Ordem Decaída
does scale better with
Deleite do Invocador
.
Ensinamentos Sinistros
is simply not strong enough to beat out the increased haste from
Deleite do Invocador
.
Sims:
Patchwerk
DungeonSlice
Potential Covenant Changes
The main reason that you're likely here is for information about whether or not this changes what Covenant that Windwalkers want to use in various content. The short answer is... maybe.
Currently Kyrian is king in all content, despite the fact that Night Fae and Necrolord can beat it in very specific circumstances. While
Preparado Abundante
isn't enough to beat
Deleite do Invocador
, thus keeping Necrolord where it is;
Harmonia Feelina
is strong enough to take the top spot for Night Fae , and even push it equal to or ahead of Kyrian/
Deleite do Invocador
in many situations. However, they are, in reality, likely to be close enough that one shines in certain situations and the other is best in other situations.
For example,
Harmonia Feelina
and Night Fae are more built for AOE situations where you can get the debuff on multiple targets, as well as sustained damage situations where lining up cooldowns is less impactful, but consistent pressure is best. Kyrian and
Deleite do Invocador
are more built for burst situations where you can line up all your cooldowns into small windows, but the damage between those windows isn't as impactful, its also more focused on single target damage, because you can adjust what buttons you press based on how many targets you are facing.
So currently it looks like players who want to focus on things like M+ will likely want to pick Night Fae and
Harmonia Feelina
due to the consistent multi-targets. You'll be slightly less useful on bosses than a Kyrian player, but more consistently useful on every single trash pack, rather than being very useful on some packs and less on others. Similarly, players who want to focus on boss damage, or burst damage, whether that's in M+ or in Raid fights, will want to stay Kyrian using
Deleite do Invocador
.
Sanctum of Domination has a healthy mix of burst and sustain, AOE and single target, encounters, so its likely that we'll see Night Fae parse best on some bosses and Kyrian parse best on others. For general purposes, the overall recommendation may transition to Night Fae and
Harmonia Feelina
, but players who enjoy Kyrian and
Deleite do Invocador
should be able to stay with that and see high levels of success.
Unfortunately Necrolord and Venthyr still have no chance of consideration.
TLDR
Night Fae has a strong chance at being the top overall Covenant in 9.1
Kyrian may still be best in pure single target and burst encounters.
Night Fae will almost certainly be best in sustained and AOE encounters.
Night Fae will use the new Covenant Legendary,
Harmonia Feelina
Everyone else will still use
Deleite do Invocador
.
There is still going to be a decent amount of work going on over the next few weeks until 9.1 goes live to improve all these things, so some may change, or the gaps between them may change. Not everything is currently working perfectly in sims, nor in game, and further tuning may happen if Blizzard wishes.
