This is a notice to let everyone know there has indeed been a surge in account security resulting in hijacked accounts, stolen items, and even loss of characters. It is very important we stress the fact that everyone needs to have their operating system, Internet browser, virus scanners, and/or any malware scanners updated to the most current versions. Please take the necessary steps to ensure no one can gain access to your computer or account without permission.
According to Blizzard, majority of accounts are compromised by one of the methods listed here, after the break:
False websites or emails which may or may not ask for user information
Programs or executable files downloaded (i.e. hacks, cheats, etc.)
Account sharing or illegal services such as power-leveling and character trading
In addition, restart your system after applying high priority updates. These updates are sometimes required before other updates can be seen or installed. For Windows OS click

. For Mac users, click

Giving Out Information
Neither Blizzard nor Wowhead will ever ask a user for their password (to any account, be it our website or the game itself) or other personal information. As for Blizzard, there are only four legitimate locations which ask users to log in. They are as follows:
The ingame log-in screen (duh)
World of Warcraft Account Management -
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/account/
World of Warcraft Armory website -
https://www.wowarmory.com/login.xml
World of Warcraft Official Forums -

Keeping Things Secure
In addition, Blizzard offers the following advice to help keep your account safe:
Verify that your email address in
Account Management
is current. You can see your address on the right side of the Account Management page and change it with the "Change Contact Info" button.
Scan your computer for viruses, Trojans, and key loggers.
After doing this, we
highly
recommend changing the password on the account to a brand-new, unique one, and making sure to keep this password private.
The Authenticator
The Blizzard Authenticator, a key chain device with a serial number, is a sure-fire way to block unauthorized access to an account. A few extra seconds typing in a unique numerical code during log in, which cannot be reverse engineered, is well worth the few dollars it takes to purchase one. Our Stance
Here at Wowhead we have a very firm stance against gold selling, power leveling, and other services which are expressly forbidden in the official
Terms of Use
. We will also never ask for nor give out personal information to third-parties.
We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday, cheers!
