I think we've become desensitized to abominations...

Abominations are not what they used to be. They have become trash and low priority mobs, taking a lower status than many of their Scourge brethren.
When I first saw
Stitches
, my first abomination, I was a mite freaked out. What sort of horrible person could make this from corpses? It really gave me an insight into what sort of evil we face.
But now they're just raid fodder in Naxxramas, Guards in Undercity and Icecrown, and generally a common sight. Between their low polygon count and their common status, we just don't fear them any more.
We need something like
this
.
This was an honorable mention in the 2006 Blizzard Fant Art contest, and it really captures the essence of an abomination: horror, power, and unnature.
Blizzard needs to really shock us in Icecrown. The Abominations have so much potential for creeping people out, but instead their just another trash pull, or another quest mob. Heck, we put them to our own use in Undercity and the Icecrown daily.
We need to fear the Scourge again.

I agree... but this is they way it usually is.
Have you ever watched Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis? Then you know how they change the Jaffa/Wraith from being practially impossible to kill in the beginning to cannonfodder in the end.

They were raid fodder in the old Naxxramas too, when Abominations were *sort of* a rarity in Azeroth.

That picture freaked me out. THAT should be a new model introduced for the Icecrown Raid expansion!
EDIT: THAT WAS JUST AN HONORABLE MENTION! WHAT WAS THE WINNERS LIKE!

I still think NPCs that use the same model as
Grobbulus
are utterly disturbing. I really find them even more disturbing and creepy than that abomination painting in the OP's post.
But I am willing to agree...partially. The abominations, the brute horrors of the Scourge, have become mostly trash. But as a replacement, we are getting deadlier and quieter horrors. It seems like the Scourge and its allies are becoming more human-like in their appearance, which I think makes them even more unhuman, because of their behaviour.

Grobbulus is pure evil, the fat doctor type with the big needle. Kinda sad though, C'Thun and Yogg are based on the Old Gods of Lovecraft mythos and yet there not that......well scary. Need something along those lines to really freak people out.

No, I don't think "scary" is
the
right word here, although it is certainly
a
right one. The Grobbulus model is purely
wrong
. It's something that just shouldn't exist...

That detaled picture is truely what an abomonation should look like. That thing is terrifying. Whoever drew that up has a great imagination.

Id say the ghouls/skeleton forces are more the cannon fodder, the Abominations were suppose to be the match for the other races riding on horses and the like. But yeah, there getting old....except for argent dawn rep cause there worth 30 a shot heh.

the main reason is because Abominations are brute fighters, heavy emphasys on BRUTE.
they have a lack of brains, are almost childish, and because of that, they never raise the ranks of common foot-soldier.
heck, I still remember when I was scared of hogger xD.
when we get used to a mob, it looses the initial impact it has on us, the first time I was in shadowmoon valley, the place was scary, creepy, and the mobs like........ say the shivara left an impresion on me, but now they are basic NPCs whom I just klick and auto-attack to death.
even if they get promoted to raid-boss status, after seeing them over and over again they just loose their awesomeness.
the reason the abominations have passed from scary intimidating mobs to common sight is cuz their lack of brains and cunning, combined with their overabundance, has made them rutine-mob for us.
(PD: yhea the abomination in the picture of the OP, really is scary, it would be REALLY creapy to have one of those in the game, maybe blizz will dare and add one in icecrown citadel raid)
